Why Do We Settle for Less?

Interview with Rob Scott, MD

Multi-sport Athlete and Emergency Physician

DX: You have been practicing medicine since 1983 and have worn scrubs at work for over 30 years, any thoughts on your medical uniform?
RS: "It's amazing that highly educated professionals would settle for wearing what amount to sheets converted into clothes."

DX: Why do you think this is the case?
RS: "Because of all the things physicians have on their plate, they haven't given it much thought. Someone else, usually a medical assistant or practice manager, just gets whatever they've gotten historically."

DX: A counter argument might be: why would you want to have a nice medical uniform when you get body fluid contamination, etc on them?
RS: "This doesn't fly, because many wear their long sleeve shirts from home underneath that are more likely to be contaminated!"

DX: So if your uniform included a base layer it could prevent HC professionals from wearing their non-work clothes underneath?
RS: "After 30 years in the field, I am simply amazed this isn't the case."
